  Mastering Macie

Macie Lynn Owens loved her life. She did what she wanted, when she wanted, and nobody was going to tell her otherwise. She gave up the silly dream of finding a man, children, and happily ever after. Accepting what life had dished out to her, she never looked back, until one night changed everything.

When fate knocks and gives Matthew and Andrew Jenkins a second chance, they grab on with both hands and refuse to let go. However, convincing the spitfire diner owner to accept their claim is harder than they thought. When two shocking dinner guests arrive unexpectedly, they have a new bargaining chip, and they aren’t afraid to use it.

As the town gears up for its bicentennial Founders Day Parade, a blast from the past returns, causing more trouble than the town can handle. As the pots and pans start flying, the residents must stand together to save everything they hold dear, or watch it all burn.

Note: There is no sexual relationship or touching for titillation between or among siblings.

  Prologue

July 1979, the Founders Day Parade, Treasure Cove, Montana

It was an unusually hot day in Montana for the month of May, but nobody seemed to care. The warm sun beat down on the townsfolk of Treasure Cove, and everyone was happy. They all considered it a blessing and good fortune as the procession slowly moved down Main Street. The cold winter wreaked havoc on the town and surrounding counties. The hardest hit were the ranchers who lost several cattle. Nevertheless, with the last of the snow melted and a cool breeze blowing down the mountains, the townsfolk clapped, cheered, and whistled as they watched the parade pass by.

It was the Founders day parade, and everyone had shown up. The smell of cotton candy, barbecue, and manure filled her nose as she giggled, watching the clowns dance and play. Macie loved this time of year. School was officially out for the summer. The weather was getting warmer, and for the next two and a half months, she looked forward to playing in the warm sunshine with her friends.

She loved summer. It was her favorite time of year. Most of the kids her age were eager for their summer fun and were already talking about spending their days out at the pond, but she didn’t care. She just wanted to spend time with them. She blushed just thinking about them. She knew she was younger, but she didn’t mind. To her, the Jenkins brothers were the dreamiest, most handsome men she had ever met, and she just knew that someday, they would belong to her, and she couldn’t wait.

Except for now she had to wait for her momma to give her permission to run free, but she knew that wasn’t going to happen today. When she woke, her mother dressed her in her prettiest dress, and she hated it. She fussed and argued with her momma, but in the end, she lost and was now standing on the sidewalk in a bright-yellow sundress that her momma made her, her long chestnut hair braided in two simple braids with white ribbon bows at the end.

  S
he looked like a prairie girl. She had tried to talk momma out of it, but she shut her mouth fast when her momma got that look on her face. The one that meant if she continued her fanny would be sore. When she asked why she had to wear a dress, all her momma said was, “I want you to look pretty today.” Since the only time she ever wore a dress was to church, she didn’t argue and let her momma dress her up like a doll.

  She hated it but smiled.

However, standing under the warm sun with nothing but a dress on, she wished she had fought harder. The sweat beaded down her back. Her braids annoyed her, but the moment she saw them, all her anxiety fled. They made their way through the crowd, smiling, talking, and joking with those they passed. Both strong and robust. Their sandy-blond hair shimmered like gold in the afternoon sun, but it was their smiles that pulled at her heart. To her, Matthew and Andrew Jenkins were the most beautiful men on the planet. Holding her breath, she waited as they approached, and when they turned their smiles on her, she gasped.

“Well, if it isn’t little Macie Lynn,” Matthew said, crouching down to look her in the eyes. That was one of things she loved about him. He talked to anyone, and he did so with determination and respect, no matter how old they were.

“Look at that pretty dress she has on, brother. I think our Macie Lynn has a hot date later.” Andrew winked at her as he elbowed his brother.

“Not my Macie. She told me last week that she would wait for me. Isn’t that right, Macie?” Matthew asked.

“I swear, Matty. I ain’t gonna see no one. A promise is a promise,” she blurted out.

“See, Andy? I told ya. Our Macie just got dressed up for us. Ain’t that right chick-a-pen?”

  “Uh-huh!”

“Well, my apologies, Macie,” Andrew said as he leaned over and kissed her cheek. Macie’s heart damn near stopped. He smelled so wonderful, like peppermint taffy. She loved taffy.

“We better go, Andy. We have that meeting we can’t miss, remember?” Matthew said, standing. “Talk to ya later, Macie. Stay out of trouble, okay?”

  “All right, Matty.”

“Bye, squirt!” Andrew said, laughing as he and his brother walked away.

“I am not a squirt!” Macie shouted, hands placed on her hips, attracting the attention of those around her. The brothers didn’t hear her. She watched as long as she could. When they crossed the street and disappeared behind one of the buildings, her heart sank.

  They were gone.

At only ten years of age, she couldn’t wait until she turned eighteen. The next eight years were going to be the longest years of her life. Of course, she knew she was too young for them, and they were all grown up, but that didn’t stop her from secretly wishing that they were hers in her heart.

“Macie Lynn, what are you doing?”

  “Nuttin’, Momma.”

“It’s nothing, not nuttin’, and pay attention. Here comes Judge Connelly,” her mother chastised.

“Yes, Momma.” She smiled as her mother tried to pat off what little dust was on the front of her dress. She never could understand her mother’s frenzy when it came to the judge.

Every time Macie Lynn was around, the judge ignored her but always smiled at her momma. Looking up at her, Macie smiled. Her momma was pretty, one of the prettiest women in Treasure Cove, and she got to work for the judge.

For as long as Macie could remember, her momma had always worked. Since she had no daddy, her momma did everything for her. Though Macie knew that some women in the town didn’t like her momma, they never said anything while she was around. They always waited until her momma turned her back before they said mean things.

“Pay attention, Macie Lynn. He’s looking at you.” Her mother smiled as she quickly patted her hair and looked at the judge.

Macie Lynn turned just in time to watch the beloved judge of Treasure Cove walk past. She always thought it was funny that a man named Judge would grow up and become a real, honest-to-God judge. However, what did she know? She was only ten years old. Therefore, it was nothing when she saw the judge smile and wink at her mother. He was friendly, and she knew he was always polite to her momma.

Nevertheless, when the judge quickly turned and looked at her, his smile faded. He then turned to look and wave at someone else.

“Momma, can I go play now?” she asked, knowing that since the judge had passed, there was no reason for her momma to stay any longer. Besides, she wanted to go find Matty and Andy.

“Go on. I’ll be at the courthouse if you need me.”

“Yes, ma’am!” Macie shouted and darted into the street, weaving in and out of the parade, knowing where she would find them. She had just made it to the end of the block when a strong arm grabbed her into a hug. “Whoa there, firecracker! Where are you runnin’ off to in a hurry?” the rich, powerful voice asked.

Macie turned and smiled. “Hi, Uncle Collin! I gotta go. I gotta find someone.”

“Really? And would this someone be a boy?”

  “Umm no,” Macie stammered.

“Well, if it’s not a boy, then I guess you can come help me with your cousins. Your aunt Margaret isn’t feeling too good.”

“It’s ’cause of the baby. Is she gonna have it today?”

“No clue, firecracker. Where is my sister?”

“Momma said she had to go to the courthouse,” Macie informed her uncle. The smile quickly faded from his face. He looked up as his eyes found the large four-story courthouse. “You go on and play, Macie. I need to go talk with my sister.”

“Yes, sir.” She smiled and took off again.

Running fast, she rounded the corner of the sheriff’s station. She came to a complete halt.

There standing before her was Isabella Romanov. Her long chestnut hair shimmered in the afternoon sun as she leaned against the brick building. Dressed in a simple summer dress and sandals, she trailed her hand slowly down Matthew Jenkins chest. He smiled warmly at her as he and his brother Andrew moved closer to her.

They must have said something funny because she heard Isabella laugh. That was when Macie’s world turned upside down. Matthew and Andrew Jenkins both leaned in and kissed her.

Macie gasped and ran as fast as her legs would take her as the tears fell from her eyes.

  PART I

  Chapter One

Treasure Cove, Montana. A year and a half ago.

Macie Lynn Owens loved her life. She was single, owned her own business, and made friends with everyone. But mostly what she liked about her life was that she answered to no one.

She was her own woman. She could sleep late on the weekends, hogging the whole bed if she wanted to. She could watch whatever she wanted on television, and she always knew where the remote was. She didn’t have to worry about putting the toilet seat lid down because it was always down. Moreover, she sure as hell didn’t have to ask anyone for permission if she wanted to go out and get drunk. Mainly, she never, ever had to worry about some man breaking her heart. She had learned that lesson early on in life, one she never forgot.

She lived in total bliss. Unlike a few of her friends who decided to travel down the matrimonial road, Macie stood true to a promise she made when she was just a little girl.

She would never allow any man to break her heart.

Growing up as the illegitimate daughter of the town whore, Macie acquired a very thick skin early on. She knew that perception was everything. To get somewhere in this world, she had to play by a certain set of rules. As a single business owner, she couldn’t be flaunting herself at any man who walked into her diner. Relationships were a no-no and strictly hidden from the general public, unless she was willing to accept the wrath of the local busybodies. It was those women on the city council who could make or break her business. With one strike already against her because of her parentage, it took a lot of begging and pleading with those biddies before she could even get the permits to build her little diner.

After that, she had to fight tooth and nail with the bank for a lo
an. Finding a construction crew was easy. She just called her cousins and told them what she wanted, knowing they could build anything. It had been a long road but worth every headache.

Three days ago, she had just celebrated her thirty-fifth birthday in true single fashion. Unlike most women her age who had two or three kids, a grumpy husband or two barking orders, and were too damn tired to care about their special day. Macie celebrated her birthday with a bang out at the Pleasure Cave.

Given the royal treatment by one sexy son of a bitch dungeon master, her ass still burned a little from that night. Matthias had spanked her in front of a full house, thirty-seven times as onlookers counted and cheered for her. Afterward, Matthias and two of the other in house Doms gave her some individual attention as they catered to her every need. It was a night she would never forget, and she loved every minute of it.

However, with the good came the bad.

As much as Macie loved her life, there were moments when she felt all alone. Curled in her bed, she would give anything for someone to be holding her. However, she didn’t want just anyone. She wanted the unattainable. She wanted her dream.

Reaching over into the top drawer of her nightstand, she pulled out a framed picture. Lying on her back, she lifted the picture to look at the two men who stood smiling back at her. No matter what she did, she knew she couldn’t stop the hurt from invading her heart. These two men, these brothers, she loved with everything in her being. However, nothing was ever going to come of it. Only one remained, and the other was a coward. He left Treasure Cove long ago, and took her heart with him.
